Mental rehearsal for the moment in front of you
Mental rehearsal means practicing a response before you need it. For an athlete, that might be the start of a race, the approach to a jump, or returning to the next play after a mistake. The focus is a useful action you can repeat.
Try a simple rehearsal
- Choose one moment. Make it specific: waiting for your attempt, taking your position, or preparing for the next point.
- Notice the setting. Use the sounds, physical sensations, words, or images that are useful to you. You do not need a vivid picture.
- Practice one response. Rehearse where you will direct your attention and the next action you will take. Include a realistic distraction and your return to the task.
- Keep a short cue. Choose words you can use during real practice, such as “steady start” or “next action.” Afterward, notice whether the cue helped and adjust it.
Before competition: rehearse your routine
Start with the part of preparation you can control. Rehearse the sequence from arriving at your starting position to beginning the task. You can use breathwork to settle into the practice without making the absence of nerves a requirement.
After a mistake: rehearse your return
Choose the point where you want to regain attention. Practice acknowledging what happened, using your cue, and returning to one relevant action. Keep technical adjustments with your coach and use reflection to notice what helped.
Is mental rehearsal the same as visualization?
Visualization is one way to rehearse. A practice can also include sound, movement, physical sensations, words, and the timing of an action. Athlete Mindset lets you work with a mix of these rather than requiring a vivid mental image.
